HURRICANE IRMA & MARIA VICTIMS NEED YOUR HELP

Our Response

PFABC strives for the betterment of the communities we serve. The utter devastation and human displacement caused by hurricane Irma and Maria in our Caribbean communities has profoundly challenged our capacity to respond. We thank those who have assisted our efforts to send donated goods to help those in need.

THE CHALLENGE FOR US

The challenge imposed on us and indeed anyone who cares for fellow human beings calls for not only an immediate and urgent assistance but also a permanent solution. We have done and continue to do our part with respect to immediate assistance. However, we have come to recognize that as an organization we have the capability to pursue an end to the annual ritual of home destruction, human displacement and constant rebuilding caused by hurricanes. Enough is enough. In this technological age, can’t we do something about homes that are in the annual hurricane pathways?

BUILD HURRICANE WIND RESISTANT HOMES IN THE CARIBBEAN

Surely, we can build homes such that they are no longer susceptible to hurricane force winds. Building homes that can withstand hurricane force winds is nothing new. It’s just that it has not been widespread. Imagine if all homes that sit in the path of the annual hurricanes could withstand category 5 winds. That is doable and we intend to start building such homes in the Caribbean starting with Puerto Rico, Us Virgin Islands, Barbuda and Dominica where our communities have been displaced by Irma and Maria. These homes will be built to meet Miami-Dade County building standards, the stringiest in the nation. As a long- term goal, we are raising funds to end the pain and waste of communities always having to rebuild, year in and year out. Local nonprofits shall identify the recipients of such homes.
